|  Powells City of Books is the largest independent book store in the world. No joke. When you walk in the front doors, you will be amazed. 4 floors (68,000 square feet!) and one full block of every imaginable book, in and out of publication. Check out these amazing stats: Powells City of Books has 9 color-coded sections throughout the various floors that house over 3,500 different sections and over 1,000,000 books. 80,000 Powells Books lovers visit and shop there every single day. Pretty darned mind-blowing, huh? If you've been searching for hard-to-find and out-of-print stuff, Powells is your hook up! They have a Rare Book Room to accommodate you ;) Even though there are actually 7 locations in the Portland area, the most famous and talked out is the huge one located at 1005 W Burnside.
Not only can you buy and sell new and used books there, but you can cozy up with a cup of coffee in their own World Cup Coffee & Tea coffee shop and relax or catch a special author event The city of Portland is full of artists and they make Powells Book Store in Portland OR a regular haunt.
 They stock a large selection of magazines that wrap half-way around the main floor of the store and also have a shelf of local e-zines from local artists and authors. Some of those are pretty strange, but all are interesting in their own respect.
If you're a collector of action figures, the ones stocked by Powells will flip you out! They have Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Jesus, a nasty librarian, a nutty, old lady who loves cats and many more. Pretty funny stuff.
Print out a Powells map and take it with you or just a pocketful of breadcrumbs. With 122 major subject areas and more than 3,500 subsections, you may just have a difficult time finding your way back out. But honestly, would you want to? ;)
