I've always loved Powells City of Books. I used to be a veracious reader when I was younger. Even though not as much anymore, the local feel of the book store is what is really captivating and I'll often go just to browse and enjoy a nice cup of coffee or tea.
Powells City of Books is the largest independent book store in the world. No joke. When you walk in the front doors, you will be amazed. 4 floors (68,000 square feet!) and one full block of every imaginable book, in and out of publication.

Even though there are actually 7 locations in the Portland area, the most famous and talked out is the huge one located at 1005 W Burnside.
Not only can you buy and sell new and used books there, but you can cozy up with a cup of coffee in their own World Cup Coffee & Tea coffee shop and relax or catch a special author event The city of Portland is full of artists and they make Powells Book Store in Portland OR a regular haunt.
