The Portland Street of Dreams, which started running annually in 1976, is something that I look forward to every year. Each year, about 10 local builders get together to create a new development of homes that would make Bill Gates blush!
This Portland Oregon homes event draws 80,000 visitors each summer. What you'll see is nothing short of breathtaking....Portland real estate that will have you drooling from home to home. ;)
The homes usually run a cool $2 million and up and are definitely the best of the best. The locations vary each year, so you'll have to wait for the announcements on the TV, radio and their official web site.
My younger brother is an expert cabinet maker with his own company and has actually worked on the SoD homes in the past. It's pretty cool when you know someone that participated in building these big, lovely house.
Now, I'm a sucker for a long, hot shower, so I'd have to say that one of the coolest things I've seen in one of these huge homes at the Portland Street of Dreams was a large, granite shower stall, big enough for two (at least!), with duel massage shower heads on each end. It was like standing by a mountain next to a waterfall. So awesome! ;)
The 2009 Street of Dreams that my wife and I attended was just as cool, being held in the Pearl District and showcasing upscale condos, rather than homes, that ranged in price from the low-$1 million to the mid-$4 million.
We absolutely love looking at big, fancy homes. We wouldn't necessarily strive to own one (a fire can take all that hard work out in an instant!), but it's fun to see just how creative these talented home builders can be.
Admission to take the tour of these beautiful homes (or condos) is not too costly and the proceeds go to Doernbecher's Childrens Hospital. When it houses, the parking is free, but now that they are venturing down into the city, you may have to plug a parking meter.
If you get hungry, you can get something to munch and sip on at the concession stands and you'll want to dress appropriately, being as it is primarily an outside event. July tends to be rather warm and good shoes will help a lot when walking throughout the homes.
If you're someone with a fat wallet or you just like to dream, make sure that you don't miss the Portland Streets of Dreams, brought to you by the Home Builders Association of Metropolitan Portland.
