I absolutely love finding new things to do, places to eat and stay at within the city, but uncovering some sort of Portland special for the place I'm at is like uncovering buried treasure. Here's an example of what local businesses are doing around here and the type of deals they are offering. I attended a Foursquare event in April on Foursquare Day, held by Whiffies Fried Pies (a food cart over on 12th and Hawthorne).
They put the word out that they wanted to help all Foursquare users get their Super Swarm Badge (if you don't know what a Badge is, head over to Foursquare's site and sign up. It's free and fun!). Every person that "checked in" received a $1 off their fried pie and was entered into a drawing to win a free pie each day for an entire year.
To make a long story short, the result would be 250+ people all at one time in one place. The media showed up, there was a live streaming broadcast from a local Internet show and, of course, hundreds of hungry geeks. It was a big success and a good time to be had by all. I'm sure that Whiffies will be reaping the benefits for years to come.
