BOLEROS FOR THE DISENCHANTED
Feb. 9-March 3, 2012 • Milagro Theatre, 525 SE Stark St., Portland
ABOUT THE PLAY Passion and humor collide amid the warm, sunny breezes of 1950s Puerto Rico when Eusebio sweeps Flora off her feet and off to America — away from her family and her familiar life. Nearly 40 years later, an angel visits Eusebio with a mysterious message that stirs up old secrets and causes Flora to question the life she has tirelessly built in a foreign land. This production is in English. We expect the performance to last about 2.5 hours, including intermission. Due to its adult themes, this play is suitable for ages 16+.
PERFORMANCES & TICKETS Boleros for the Disenchanted plays Feb. 10 through March 3, 2012 at the Milagro Theatre (525 SE Stark St., Portland, OR 97214). Thousands Expected To Take Polar Plunge In Fundraiser For Special Olympics Oregon
On the morning of February 11, fully-clothed Portland Police Lieutenant Jeff Kaer will run across the sand at NE Portland's Broughton Beach, and into Columbia River, yelling at the top of his lungs as he hits the icy water. More than a thousand of his colleagues, friends and neighbors are expected to join him in his chilly plunge, with an even greater number of warmly dressed spectators watching from a safe distance.
It's called the Polar Plunge. And even though it sounds a little crazy, this annual event will raise much-needed support for Special Olympics Oregon. Between February 3 and 18, five cities will host similar plunges with nearly 4,000 participants total. "Polar Plungers" in Eugene and Corvallis will sprint into the Willamette River. In Medford they'll jump into an unheated outdoor pool. And in Bend, they'll brave the icy Deschutes River. Each plunger will have raised a minimum of $50 in pledges from friends and family for the privilege of running into the water. Most won’t stop at $50, and an elite cadre of Super Plungers, who've raised at least $3,000 each, will enter the water in Portland once an hour for a twenty four hour period
Polar Plungers can participate as individuals or recruit a group of friends to run into the water as a team. Many businesses have used this as a team-building exercise and community service project for their employees.
Polar Plunge Oregon presented by Fred Meyer is made possible through extensive support from Oregon law enforcement agencies through the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) event. LETR is the largest grass roots fundraising effort for Special Olympics. This year's Polar Plunge will receive volunteer help with security, safety, publicity and plunging from fifteen law enforcement agencies around the state.
The Portland Police Bureau will be joined by officers, personnel and support from Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, Port of Portland Police Department, Troutdale Police Department, and Oregon Air National Guard. Several hundred Law Enforcement officers from nearly 30 agencies will be taking the plunge state-wide.
According to Special Olympics Oregon CEO Margaret Hunt, challenging economic times have not dampened people's willingness to give of their time and money.
People wishing to take the plunge for Special Olympics Oregon can register online at PlungeOregon.com. Those who don't want to go into the cold water themselves can support another plunger or team, or they can take the “Too Chicken to Plunge” option. Details are on the website.

When: February 11 at 11 AM (other dates in February around the state)
