On a lovely Saturday, the city of Portland held their annual Eat Mobile event. The word, "Eat" screams of delightful delicacies dancing in my mouth, while "Mobile" reminds me that Portland boasts 700+ food carts and counting. I was jazzed!
This special event was held at OMSI, put on by the generous folks at Willamette Week, and celebrated the best 50 Portland food carts the Rose City has to offer. That, of course, is relative, but you don't argue with the people providing the avenue to the grub. I didn't argue and neither did 3,000 other visitors, all salivating at the thought of the scrumptious samples that each mobile eatery doled out.
Eat Mobile was held out of doors for five wonderfully delicious hours and we were all very lucky that the weather cooperated. I brought along my wife as my camera woman to help me cover the event for all you fine people. I didn't need to twist her arm too hard into accompanying me there. ;)
Not only was the food flowing far and wide, but there were numerous events, competitions, and live music happenings throughout the entire evening, that kept my foot tapping in time to my mouth's chewing.
My favorite event was a competition for the best sandwich in Portland, which pitted long-time carts, Big Ass Sandwiches against Grilled Cheese Grill, against one another. It was a battle of monumental proportions as each Portland food cart owner worked at a fever pace to construct a sandwich to rival all sandwiches.
The end result? Grilled Cheese Grill won the crown this year, but the audience was the real winner, as both of those huge sandwiches were cut up and distributed to all us hungry onlookers.
All that to convince you that when Portland has a food event, you need to mark your calendar immediately. Your taste buds are counting on you!
By the way....
