Columbus Day Storm - 50th Anniversary

Does anyone have memories to share about the Columbus Day Storm??

I was in a school bus going from Stevenson to La Center for a football game. We came down the Gorge and when we got to Washougal, it hit us full force.

It blew the bus into a shallow ditch and knocked down a power pole right in front of us. Because of electrical danger, we all got out of the bus, uninjured, and ran for cover.

We got behind a house, but when the roof started to blow off, about half of the football team ran around, grabbed it, and actually kept it in place.

There was no football game that night, but hose football guys sure are macho.

Since its the 50th anniversary of this ominous event coming up next week, I would like to hear other stories about the worst windstorm, possibly ever, in our area.

Anyone want to share?

I never heard of such a storm. My parents actually moved to here when I was a child and so I haven’t heard any such stories from them. But, I would certainly love to hear more about it and if anyone do have more photographs of it, please do share.
